Tuesday September 25th 2018 - Day 2567 - Give us a drink
Morrissey hasn't had a 'session' in The Wrong Arms for a number of weeks now, but he is obviously still keeping an eye on the world's only Morrissey themed internet pub, as is proven by the fact that he occasionally pops in from time to time to leave the odd comment..... not that his comments are odd, what I mean is, oh, you know what I mean....
Yesterday was one of those such days, with Morrissey popping in at 4.37pm to leave comment on a video clip posted by Portland Jo (@lifeisapigsty_) of Johnny Marr singing Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me. Morrissey (as @Alfsbutton) tweeted, "Oh give us a drink and make it quick".
FRANK VULGAR - PUBLICAN
Morrissey obviously doesn't think much to Johnny's version of the Last Night I Dreamt, and it is hardly surprising. When Morrissey sings it, it is an emotional song filled with utter despair, but the only despair to come from Johnny's emotionless ploddy version is that felt by the listener. I won't write any more about Johnny, as it usually ends up with me getting myself into trouble - the first time I criticised JM, he blocked me (and Morrissey!) on Twitter, and another time that I criticised him, Mozzer hauled me over the coals - which at least gave me material to write a parody piece - so let me move on, although before I do, I must throw in the caveat that I always throw in when I criticise Johnny's singing..... I still think he is a genius, and a wonderful, wonderful guitarist.
SINGER OF DESPAIR
Another Morrissey concert has been announced since my previous blog entry - LA's Microsoft Theatre on November 1st, with Joan Jett supporting. It is a 7,000 capacity arena, so it should be a good night, and no doubt there will be a number of celebs in attendance; in LA it's cool to be seen at a Moz gig - Britain take note.
And on the subject of celebrity Moz fans, Justin Timberlake turned up at a festival in Vegas on Saturday dressed in a Moz t-shirt - he has incredibly good taste.
We have also had news from Shorefire.com that a deluxe version of Low In High School is to get a release in December, and will feature: Back on the Chain Gang, the five live b sides and three unreleased tracks. That puts an end to Chain Gang & You'll Be Gone being on the covers LP, but it will be interesting to see which new songs we get; I would guess that Blue Dreamers Eyes is a certainty, and presumably the other two will be two of those I wrote about on Day 2374. Jesse Tobias recently mentioned on social media that the new Covers LP wouldn't be released until next March, and now we know why. Also coming with the deluxe version of LIHS will be, "a rare version of a photo booth portrait taken when the legendary frontman was a student" - there are a few photo booth portraits of Morrissey for him to choose from - he must have enjoyed using photo booths in the seventies.... not that you'd know it from his facial expressions!
And finally for today, following the EU's rejection of Theresa May's half-hearted and half-baked Brexit proposal, it looks ever more likely that Britain will either end up with a very watered-down Brexit deal, that effectively will see us answering to the EU, or alternatively we will have a second referendum, in which the public will be given the choice to vote for either this watered-down 'non-Brexit', or stay in the EU; with politicians no doubt telling us, "Britain will be a major force". There would also be a third option - probably hidden on the back of the ballot paper - which would be to leave to EU with no deal; which is what the majority voted for in the first place, but the public will be TOLD that voting for this option will equate to Armageddon, and will be TOLD it isn't really an option. We are, at this point, reminded of Morrissey's words in an interview with The Sunday Times: "Brexit will never happen because Westminster don't want it, they're just finding a way not to make it Brexit" - old Mozzer saw all this coming.
