Monday November 12th 2018 - Day 2615 Life is a Pigsty

As I lay in bed on Sunday night watching Youtube footage of Morrissey's Saturday night concert in San Diego; which incidentally was the last show of the six 'California Specials', I was struck with just how much Morrissey was enjoying himself. He has always said that he lives to be on the stage, but in these six shows he has been absolutely full of energy, offering-up shimmying dance moves, a whole load of mic-cord whipping and; as he aims his lyrics of disdain at all the lying journalists and turn-away former fans, lots of finger pointing, fist punching, and facial grimacing. Morrissey is on fire.

MORRISSEY - ON FIRE IN SAN DIEGO - WITH A BACKDROP OF ANNIE WALKER & ELSIE TANNER

As Morrissey signed out of California, there was a special treat for fans in San Diego - Life is a Pigsty - which was dedicated to, "Our friends in Thousand Oaks". Thousand Oaks is a city in Ventura County, and it has been in the news twice this week, firstly because of a mass murder from a shooter in a bar, and secondly from fires which have been causing huge devastation and loss of life. Although Pigsty was dedicated to "Our friends", I personally wouldn't be surprised if Morrissey was actually singing the song not for the victims of the shooting or those affected by the fire, but instead for the shooter, Ian Long.

IAN LONG

My reasoning for thinking Moz had Long in his thoughts is because of the story as to why the massacre happened.  As Long was carrying out the killings, he stopped to take to Instagram and post these words:

"It's too bad I won't get to see all the illogical and pathetic reasons people will put in my mouth as to why I did it, fact is, I had no reason to do it, and I just thought... life is boring, so why not?" He then added, "I hope people call me insane, would that just be a big ball of irony? Yeah... I'm insane, but the only thing you people do after these shootings is 'hopes and prayers'... or 'keep you in my thoughts'. And wonder why these keep happening." He then shot himself.

The authorities - including Donald Trump - have predictably done exactly as Long said they would, and labelled him insane, whilst former friends have been quick to distance themselves, calling him 'weird'; although what exactly is weird about practising your dancing in the garage?

The more I read about Long, the more I get an impression he was a normal, quiet man, who was very likely suffering from PTSD from his time in the Marines. Ironically, it is the likes of Trump and the military mad leaders who turned Ian Long into a killer. They call him insane and weird, in fact they call him everything, except what he was.

It is my guess that Morrissey saw the same in Ian Long as I have. To Ian Long, life was simply, a pigsty.

IAN LONG AND FRIEND

If I am correct in my theory, then the only surprise is that Morrissey chose not to say that Pigsty was for Ian Long, although it would have caused an awful lot of controversy, so perhaps Moz decided that he has had enough backlash in recent months - you can't blame him for that.

MORRISSEY IN SAN DIEGO - WITH 'PIGSTY' WRITTEN ON HIS SHIRT

There have been many highlight songs on the tour, and none more so than William, it Was Really Nothing. I L-O-V-E love this song, and have only ever seen it sung live once, back in 1985. It was added to the set in the Winter of 2006, but for some reason - that I can no longer remember - I wasn't able to go to either Wembley or the G Mex in Manchester to see Morrissey on that tour, so missed seeing/hearing it again. I dearly hope to see it live again one day.

There has been no return to The Wrong Arms by Our Mozzer, so I have nothing else to write about, although I must make mention of yet MORE lies from Pitchfork and other so called news outlets, who falsely reported that Morrissey had been punched during the encore in SD - he was merely embraced rather enthusiastically by a stage-invading fan.

I must also make mention of a San Diego based Morrissey fan named Bela (@_Bellabyrinth), who although not known to any of our little band of outsiders, took blue roses to the concert on Saturday. Unfortunately she wasn't able to get them to Morrissey, but it just goes to show that our story is known, and believed, by more people than we know. Welcome Bela.
